With no side walls, it is loaded by crane from above or by forklift from either side, and a load may stand out past the edges if the transport is planned for it.

Before you buy a 20 ft flat rack
- End walls: fixed, or collapsible so that empty racks can be stacked? The size-type code tells them apart: it ends in P1 when the end walls are fixed and P3 when they fold. On collapsible walls, have the seller fold and raise each one and lock its pins.
- The deck: look along the floor plates or timber for cracks and soft patches, and underneath for bent cross-members.
- Lashing rings: every ring should be there and free of cracks at its base, since that is where the load pulls when the truck brakes.
- The plate: the CSC plate gives the rack’s maximum gross weight; racks of the same size are rated differently.

Moving a 20 ft flat rack and an oversized load
Empty, the rack weighs about 2,890 kg (2,750 to 3,100 kg on the data sheets), more than a dry 20 ft box, and comes off a truck by crane or side-lifter. A load wider or taller than the rack is out-of-gauge for the shipping line and may be over-dimensional cargo (ODC) on the road: settle the trailer, the route and any permit with the transporter before the rack is delivered (site preparation and unloading covers the unloading). For the trucking of the rack itself, the delivered price estimate gives an order of magnitude. GST is 18% under HSN 8609: ask whether the quote includes it (GST on shipping containers).

Choose by the length of the load: 5,634 mm of deck on the 20 ft rack, 11,657 mm on the 40 ft. Weight does not decide it on its own: racks of both sizes are rated differently (up to 45,000 kg gross for the 20 ft racks, 52,500 kg for the standard 40 ft racks and 58,600 kg for the 40 ft high cube racks on the data sheets we read), so compare the CSC plates of the racks you are offered. The 40 ft rack also needs a 40 ft trailer and weighs 5,025 kg empty, against 2,890 kg.
Can a 20 ft flat rack carry an excavator?
A compact one, if it fits on the deck (2,194 mm of usable width on the data sheets) and within the payload of the rack you are offered. It is driven or craned on, then chained to the lashing rings. A machine wider than the rack itself (2,438 mm) stands out at the sides: the shipping line treats it as out-of-gauge, and on the road it may be over-dimensional cargo.
