Shipping container types by condition
Cargo-worthy: sound walls, roof and floor, doors that seal: it can still go to sea. Wind and water tight: keeps wind and rain out, but would not pass a shipping survey. The used 20 ft box is priced from ₹1,04,000.
Carried at most one load from the factory: straight panels, even paint, clean floor.
Sold with its damage declared and without promise.
What is a shipping (cargo) container?
A shipping container, also called a cargo container, an ISO container or a sea can, is a steel box built to the ISO 668 sizes, so that ships, trucks and trains can all carry it: 20 ft or 40 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 8 ft 6 in tall, or 9 ft 6 in for a high cube. Each one carries a number on its doors and a CSC safety-approval plate. Once a shipping line retires it, it is sold for storage, offices, shops and homes. Container dimensions and weight gives every size.
How to buy a shipping container in India
- Choose the type and the condition. The table above starts from the use; container grades explained says what cargo-worthy, wind and water tight and as-is mean.
- Add delivery and unloading. The prices on this page are for the box alone. Trucking, the crane or side-lifter, and GST (18%), which most listings do not mention, come on top: the delivered price estimate adds them for your route.
- Ask for delivered quotes. Asia Containers does not sell containers: in a quote request, up to 5 partner sellers who cover your PIN code reply with a delivered price, and you buy from the one you choose. Check the box before you pay: how to inspect a used container.
Need one for a few months only? The lowest monthly rent listed in our survey for a 20 ft box is ₹14,000: see container on rent.
How to read the prices
“From” is a low market price: a quarter of the sellers of that container ask it or less, read on IndiaMART and TradeIndia on 20 October 2026. With fewer than ten sellers, it is the middle of the prices found, so at least half of them are at or below it. “Typical” is what half of the sellers ask or less. The same figure appears on the container’s page and on its cards; “too few for a firm price” marks a container with fewer than five sellers, and “Estimate” one that no seller priced this week (its page says how the figure was worked out). How the survey works.
