20 feet container price in India

A used 20 ft container costs about ₹1,04,000 to ₹1,40,000 in India: half of the 116 sellers asking on IndiaMART and TradeIndia are in that range, and the typical price is ₹1,20,000 (₹1.2 lakh). A new or one-trip box is asked at about ₹2,25,000 and an as-is box at about ₹75,000, on far fewer sellers (4 and 3). Read each price as the box where it stands: listings rarely say whether delivery or GST (18%) is included, so treat both as extra until a quote says otherwise (20 October 2026).

20 feet containers for sale

Each card is a type of box partner sellers supply, not a unit in stock; the colour is a wish and does not change the price. The price is the container's low market price, the same for every grade: a quarter of its sellers ask it or less, or about half when it has fewer than 10. "Few" marks a price that rests on fewer than 5 sellers.

One-trip
Carried at most one load from the factory: straight panels, even paint, clean floor. For a box that must look new, a fit-out or valuable cargo.
Cargo-worthy
Sound walls, roof and floor, doors that seal: it can still go to sea. For export, a site office, a shop or a home.
Wind and water tight
Keeps wind and rain out, but would not pass a shipping survey. Enough for storage on the ground.
As-is
Sold with its damage declared and without promise. For a shelter, a wall or a frame to clad.

Which 20 ft container for storage, shipping or a conversion?

  • Storing tools, stock or a harvest on the ground: wind and water tight is enough.
  • A site office, a shop or a conversion: cargo-worthy or one-trip, with a sound floor and a roof that keeps water out. For a lived-in room, the 20 ft high cube gives 305 mm more headroom.
  • Shipping goods by sea: cargo-worthy, with a valid CSC plate.
  • A shed, a wall or a frame to be clad: as-is, if you accept the declared damage.
  • Loading from the side by forklift: an open side container, whose long side opens almost end to end.
  • Short of space? A used 10 feet container is half the length, but not half the price.

Container grades explained says what each grade covers, and how to inspect a used container what to look at before paying.

What changes the cost of a 20 ft container

The grade, less than you would think. On marketplaces, cargo-worthy boxes are asked at ₹1,20,000 (46 sellers) and boxes with no grade stated at ₹1,20,000 (79 sellers), some sellers listing both: the grade written in a listing barely moves the asking price, so check the box itself, not the word. The used containers for sale page sets the grades of every size side by side.

The area. Cheapest in this reading: Mumbai region and Chennai (₹1,07,500); dearest: Hyderabad (₹1,40,000). A cheaper box in another state still has to be trucked to you: compare delivered prices, not yard prices.

Area of the listing20 ft, used (sellers)
Mumbai region₹1,07,500 (36)
Delhi NCR₹1,20,000 (25)
Chennai₹1,07,500 (18)

Hyderabad₹1,40,000 (16)

Median asking price on IndiaMART and TradeIndia by area of the listing, 20 October 2026, one value per seller; areas with at least 5 sellers. Mumbai region: Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Raigad. Delhi NCR: Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad. The largest cities are also read on their own marketplace pages, so they count more sellers. Method.

GST. Among the 20 ft listings with an exact price (sellers’ own pages and directories, read by hand), GST is stated as included in 4, added on top in 1 and not mentioned in 21. GST on containers is 18%, but a dealer selling a used box under the margin scheme pays it on its margin only: compare quotes on the same basis (GST on containers).

Delivery and unloading. The listings do not say whether delivery is included: treat each price as the box alone and ask for a delivered price in writing. Setting the box down takes a crane, a side-lifter or a tilt truck; site preparation and unloading explains which.

Size and weight

ModelInside L × W × H (mm)Door W × H (mm)m³Tare (kg)Payload (kg)

20 ft high cube container5,898 × 2,352 × 2,6982,340 × 2,58537.4 m³2,230 kg28,250 kg

Typical values: medians of the data sheets published by CMA CGM, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, MSC, ONE and ZIM; for the 20 ft HC, data sheets from makers, sellers and leasing companies, consulted on 20 October 2026. The markings on the doors give the tare and maximum gross of each box, and its CSC plate the maximum gross.

A standard 20 ft box holds 33.2 m³ (1,172 cu ft) on 13.9 m² (149 sq ft) of floor and typically carries 28,260 kg (more on a box rated 32,500 kg gross). The high cube adds 305 mm of inside height; its figures come from one manufacturer’s data sheet. Outside, both are 6,058 × 2,438 mm (19′ 10½″ × 8′); 20 ft container dimensions gives them all in feet, metres and mm.

20 ft or 40 ft container: which is better value?

Divide the typical price by the space inside. In this week’s reading, a used box is asked at about ₹3,600 per m³ for a 20 ft, ₹2,700 per m³ for a 40 ft and ₹2,500 per m³ for a 40 ft high cube.

So when you need the space, the bigger box gives more room for the money. The 20 ft box still wins when:

  • the trailer cannot reach or turn on your plot, or the gate is narrow;
  • the box will be moved again, or carried on a smaller truck;
  • you only need a store for tools or stock, and a second box can follow later.

Buying a 20 ft container safely

  1. Check the seller. Look up the GSTIN on the GST portal’s taxpayer search: the legal name and address should match the quote and the invoice.
  2. See the actual box. Visit the yard, or ask for a video call showing the container number on the door and the CSC plate. Photos taken that day are worth more than catalogue pictures; how to inspect a used container lists what to look at.
  3. Pay safely. Pay into a business bank account in the seller’s own name. Do not pay the full amount before you have seen the box, or before delivery.
  4. Get it in writing. The quote and the invoice should name the container number, the grade, the delivery terms and the GST treatment. On delivery day, check the number on the door against the invoice before the truck leaves.

Questions about 20 ft containers

What is included in the price?

Treat it as the box alone, where it stands: the listings do not say whether delivery is included. Delivery, unloading by crane or side-lifter, repainting, cutting a door or a window and fittings are quoted separately. Ask for a delivered price in writing.

How much does a new 20 ft container cost in India?

Sellers on IndiaMART ask a median of ₹2,25,000 for a new or one-trip 20 ft box (4 sellers, 20 October 2026); the one public listing with an exact price, a one-trip box, was ₹2,45,000. That is close to twice a used box at ₹1,20,000. Colour and delivery change the quote: ask each seller for the same specification. See the one-trip 20 ft container.

What is the price of a 20 ft container in Chennai?

In the reading of 20 October 2026, sellers in Chennai asked a median of ₹1,07,500 (18 sellers) for a used 20 ft box; the 4 Chennai listings with an exact price ran ₹95,000 to ₹1,49,000. Ask sellers there for a delivered quote.

Where can I find a 20 ft container for sale near me?

In the reading of 20 October 2026, most used 20 ft boxes were listed in the Mumbai region, at a typical ₹1,07,500 (36 sellers), and in Delhi NCR, at ₹1,20,000 (25 sellers); the table above gives the other areas. Wherever you are, put your PIN code in a quote request: partner sellers who cover it reply with a price delivered to your site, so a box from another state is compared with its trucking.

What does it cost to transport a 20 ft container?

Within a city, the seller quotes the trucking with the box. For a long haul, here is an estimate, not a quote: Mundra to Delhi NCR is about 1,164 km by road, and a 20 ft box comes out at ₹53,000 to ₹94,500. That applies the 5 published 40 ft rates of one shipping line (₹74 to ₹93 per km), scaled to 61–87% for a 20 ft box, the middle range of the routes of a shipping line’s 2026 trucking tariff that priced both sizes. A trucker’s quote for a box bought near you can differ. The method is on the transport cost page; for your city, use the delivered price estimate.

Is it cheaper to import a 20 ft container from China?

Compare the full cost first. A container imported to stay in India pays 10% basic customs duty (its own tariff line since 1 May 2026, at an unchanged rate), the social welfare surcharge on that duty and 18% IGST, on top of the ocean freight, port charges and clearance; a GST-registered business can usually claim the IGST back. A box already in India should have paid all this: ask for the bill of entry. Importing can make sense for a batch of new boxes built to order; for second-hand boxes, check the import policy in force with a customs broker. See importing a container into India.

Can I rent a 20 ft container instead?

Yes. Listed rents for a 20 ft box start at ₹14,000 a month (2 listings); GST and the minimum period vary, and transport is extra both ways. At the lowest rent, about 9 months cost as much as a used box at the median price. See rent or buy a container. A container home is another budget: see container house cost in India.
