Which used container for which job?

• 20 ft or 40 ft? A 40 ft box holds about twice as much (67.7 m³ against 33.2 m³) for a typical ₹1,80,000 against ₹1,20,000, but it needs a 40 ft trailer and a level spot more than 12 m long (12,192 mm), with room for the truck.
• A dry store on the ground (tools, stock, a harvest, files): a used 20 ft or used 40 ft box; wind and water tight is enough there. Where no trailer can turn, a 10 ft box, typically ₹1,67,000 (5 sellers) against ₹1,20,000 for a 20 ft box; some are cut down from a 20 ft box and lose their CSC approval until they are recertified, so ask whether it was.
• A site office, a shop or a home: a cargo-worthy box with a sound floor. For headroom, the used 20 ft high cube or the used 40 ft high cube. Boxes already fitted out are on container offices and container homes.
• Export cargo: only a cargo-worthy box, and only if its CSC plate shows a current examination.
• Chilled or frozen goods: a 20 ft reefer or a 40 ft high cube reefer, with the cooling unit run and tested before you pay.
• Loads lowered by crane, or wider than a door: an open top (20 ft, 40 ft) or a flat rack (20 ft, 40 ft).
• A shelter, a wall or a frame to clad: an old box sold as-is, once you have seen its damage.

Used container price by grade

Median price by the grade the seller wrote, one value per seller (a lone seller at its lowest price): listings with an exact price and asking prices on IndiaMART and TradeIndia (20 October 2026). Figures in grey rest on one or two values. A grade is the seller's word: check the box and its CSC plate. Method.

On marketplaces, the grade written in a listing moves the asking price very little: ₹1,20,000 (46 sellers) for a 20 ft box called cargo-worthy against ₹1,20,000 (79 sellers) for one with no grade, ₹1,85,000 (25 sellers) against ₹1,75,000 (60 sellers) for a 40 ft box (20 October 2026). Some sellers list boxes under two grades and count in both, so the sellers of the grades add up to more than the sellers of the size. Used container prices by city

Most used boxes are listed in a few metropolitan areas, and the table shows those with at least 5 sellers in this reading. For a used 20 ft box the typical price ran from Mumbai region and Chennai (₹1,07,500) to Hyderabad (₹1,40,000). Old and scrap containers for sale: price of an as-is box

In Indian listings an “old” or “scrap” container is usually a whole box sold by the piece, often as it stands, not steel sold by the kilo. On this site they are the as-is boxes: the 20 ft as-is from ₹65,000 (3 sellers) and the 40 ft as-is from ₹1,67,000 (1 seller), too few sellers for a firm price. Such a box makes a shelter, a wall or a frame. For goods that must stay dry, price a sound box in the same request: 26 of the 116 sellers of used 20 ft boxes ask ₹1,00,000 or less, and a damaged box needs repairs before it keeps goods dry.

Checks before you buy a used shipping container

1. The number and the plate. Every ISO freight container carries its number on the doors (four letters and seven digits) and a CSC safety-approval plate; ask for both on the quote. A box with neither is a site-built box, not a shipping container.
2. Daylight inside. Stand inside with the doors shut, someone outside to open them: any light through the roof or the walls is a hole.
3. Roof, walls and corners. Dents that hold rain on the roof, rust that has gone through at the foot of the walls or around the door frame, cracks at the corner castings.
4. The floor. Plywood rots with water and spills: press it near the doors, and look at the cross-members underneath if the box stands on blocks.
5. Doors and seals. Both doors should open and lock by hand, with the rubber seals whole all round.
6. What it carried. Chemicals, fertiliser or fish can leave a smell: ask, if you will store food or put people inside.
7. The papers. A tax invoice in your name with the container number and the GST treatment, the delivery terms in writing and, for a box that came from abroad, the bill of entry that shows it was cleared through customs.
8. The seller and the payment. Look the seller’s GSTIN up on the GST portal: the name should match the quote. Pay only into a business account in that name, and keep the balance until you have seen the box or it stands on your ground.

Cabins sold as used containers

In the container categories we read on 20 October 2026, 216 of the 1,058 listings with a price were prefab cabins (192) or converted units (24), not plain shipping containers. A prefab cabin is built from sheet or PUF panels and can pass for a box in a photo. The container number and the CSC plate settle it: a cabin has neither. Used or one-trip?

Few sellers price a new or one-trip 20 ft box: 4 sellers asked ₹2,00,000 to ₹2,45,000 this week, against a typical ₹1,20,000 for a used box. Pay the difference for a box that must look new or carry valuable cargo; for storage on a site or a farm, a sound used box does the job. What does a used container cost delivered to my site?

Add three things to the price of the box: GST at 18% (or on the dealer’s margin under the margin scheme), the trailer, and the unloading by crane or side-lifter. On long trips, a shipping line’s published rates from Mundra for a 40 ft box come to ₹74 to ₹93 per km: to Delhi NCR, about ₹87,000 to ₹1,06,000 one way. Is GST charged on a second hand container?

Yes, at 18% (HSN 8609), unless the dealer uses the margin scheme for second-hand goods: GST is then paid on the dealer’s margin only, and the buyer cannot claim it as input tax credit. Most listings do not say which applies, so ask in your request. See GST on shipping containers.

Can a used container become a house or a shop?
