40 feet container price in India
Half of the 80 sellers on IndiaMART and TradeIndia ask ₹1,55,000 to ₹2,00,000 for a used 40 ft container, and the typical price is ₹1,80,000 (₹1.8 lakh). A used 40 ft high cube, 305 mm taller inside, is typically ₹1,90,000 (27 sellers). New, one-trip and as-is boxes have far fewer sellers: 2 sellers for a new or one-trip 40 ft, 1 seller for an as-is box. These are prices for the box where it stands: the listings seldom say whether delivery or GST (18%) is in, so add the trailer, the lifting and GST until a quote includes them (20 October 2026).

40 feet containers for sale
Each card is a type of box partner sellers supply, not a unit in stock; the colour is a wish and does not change the price. The price is the container's low market price, the same for every grade: a quarter of its sellers ask it or less, or about half when it has fewer than 10. "Few" marks a price that rests on fewer than 5 sellers.
- One-trip
- Carried at most one load from the factory: straight panels, even paint, clean floor. For a box that must look new, a fit-out or valuable cargo.
- Cargo-worthy
- Sound walls, roof and floor, doors that seal: it can still go to sea. For export, a site office, a shop or a home.
- Wind and water tight
- Keeps wind and rain out, but would not pass a shipping survey. Enough for storage on the ground.
- As-is
- Sold with its damage declared and without promise. For a shelter, a wall or a frame to clad.

How the asking prices spread, for the containers with at least 15 sellers this week
Half of the 80 sellers ask between ₹1,55,000 and ₹2,00,000; a quarter ask less than ₹1,55,000. 6 sellers outside the range drawn.
Half of the 27 sellers ask between ₹1,58,000 and ₹2,22,000; a quarter ask less than ₹1,58,000. 1 seller outside the range drawn.
Darker bars: middle half of sellers; ₹1 L = ₹1 lakh = ₹1,00,000. Method.
40 ft high cube or standard container: height and price
Both boxes have the same floor, about 12,032 × 2,352 mm inside: 28.3 m² (305 sq ft). The high cube (40 HC, also listed as 40 HQ) is 305 mm taller, which gives 2,698 mm (8′ 10″) of clear height against 2,393 mm (7′ 10″), 76.4 m³ instead of 67.7 m³, and a door opening 2,585 mm high instead of 2,280 mm.
- For storage, take the standard box. Pallets, cartons, tools and files seldom need more height, and it is by far the easier box to find: 80 sellers this week, against 27 for the high cube.
- For a room, take the high cube. A home, an office, a café or a workshop gets a floor, a ceiling and insulation, and each of them takes height. The extra 305 mm leave a usable ceiling height once they are fitted.
- For tall goods, measure them against the door, not the box: the opening is 2,280 mm high on a standard box, 2,585 mm on a high cube.
On marketplaces the two boxes are asked at about the same price: ₹1,90,000 for a used high cube and ₹1,80,000 for a standard box, or ₹1,81,500 (16 sellers) and ₹1,85,000 (25 sellers) when the seller writes cargo-worthy. Ask for both in the same request and compare the delivered prices.
Which 40 ft container for which use?
- A long store or a warehouse annex (stock on pallets, a harvest, fertiliser, pipes, timber, files): a used standard box. On the ground, wind and water tight does the job, provided the roof and the floor are sound.
- A home, an office, a shop or a café: a one-trip high cube (₹3,15,000, 2 sellers) or a used cargo-worthy high cube with a straight roof, ₹1,81,500 (16 sellers). A dent that holds water on the roof matters more than faded paint. A 40 ft shipping container converted into an office was listed at ₹4,00,000; most container offices and homes sold in India are prefab cabins: see container offices, container homes, container shops and container cafés and what a container house costs; permission to place a container says what to ask your local body.
- Goods sent by sea: a cargo-worthy box with a CSC plate (the safety approval of the International Convention for Safe Containers) whose last examination is still valid.
- A covered yard, a wall or a frame you will clad: an as-is box, once you have seen its damage. It is not always the cheap option: this week 1 seller asked ₹1,67,000 and ₹1,68,000 for one, and 30 of the 80 sellers of used boxes ask that much or less.
- Loads lowered by crane, or too wide for any door: the 40 ft open top or the 40 ft flat rack; for pallets loaded from the side, a 40 ft high cube open side container. Chilled or frozen goods: the 40 ft high cube reefer, which also needs a three-phase power supply where it stands.
What each grade covers is set out in container grades explained; what to look at before paying, in how to inspect a used container.
40 ft container prices by grade and by area
The grade written in the listing, only a little. Sellers who call their box cargo-worthy ask ₹1,85,000 (25 sellers); sellers who state no grade, ₹1,75,000 (60 sellers) (some list both). Few write “wind and water tight”: ask for it in your request all the same, since partner sellers quote it. The word is the seller’s: the roof, the floor and the doors tell you more. Second hand containers in India compares the grades of the 20 ft and 40 ft boxes.
Where the box stands. Lowest typical price this week: Chennai (₹1,65,000); highest: Hyderabad (₹1,95,000). A long trailer journey soon eats a gap of that size, so compare delivered prices.
| Area of the listing | 40 ft, used (sellers) | 40 ft high cube, used (sellers) |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi NCR | ₹1,80,000 (24) | ₹1,77,500 (7) |
| Mumbai region | ₹1,80,000 (22) | ₹1,76,000 (10) |
| Ahmedabad | ₹1,67,500 (15) | — |
| Chennai | ₹1,65,000 (10) | ₹2,00,000 (7) |
| Hyderabad | ₹1,95,000 (9) | — |
Median asking price on IndiaMART and TradeIndia by area of the listing, 20 October 2026, one value per seller; areas with at least 5 sellers. Mumbai region: Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Raigad. Delhi NCR: Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad. The largest cities are also read on their own marketplace pages, so they count more sellers. Method.
GST. Of the 10 used 40 ft listings with an exact price (sellers’ own pages and directories, read by hand), none say whether GST is included. A box is taxed at 18%, or on the dealer’s margin only when a second-hand box is sold under the margin scheme: ask which applies before you compare (GST on containers).
The trailer and the lift. A 40 ft box needs a trailer of its length and a side-lifter or a crane at your end. Ask for a price that includes both, in writing.
How much fits in a 40 ft container?
| Model | Inside L × W × H (mm) | Door W × H (mm) | m³ | Tare (kg) | Payload (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 ft standard container | 12,032 × 2,352 × 2,393 | 2,340 × 2,280 | 67.7 m³ | 3,700 kg | 28,780 kg |
| 40 ft high cube container | 12,032 × 2,351 × 2,698 | 2,340 × 2,585 | 76.4 m³ | 3,865 kg | 28,655 kg |
Typical values: medians of the data sheets published by CMA CGM, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, MSC, ONE and ZIM, consulted on 20 October 2026. The markings on the doors give the tare and maximum gross of each box, and its CSC plate the maximum gross.
A standard 40 ft box holds 67.7 m³ (2,391 cu ft), twice the volume of a 20 ft box, on 28.3 m² (305 sq ft). Laid in two lanes, one layer takes about 23 Euro pallets or 20 standard pallets: our count from the inside size, not a loading plan. Empty, it weighs about 3,700 kg (3,630 to 4,000 kg on the data sheets), the high cube about 3,865 kg; its payload, typically 28,780 kg, is close to a 20 ft box’s (28,260 kg): a 40 ft box carries twice the volume, not twice the weight. Both measure 12,192 × 2,438 mm (40′ × 8′) outside, so they need the same spot and the same trailer. 40 ft container dimensions and 40 HC container dimensions give every figure in feet, metres and mm.
One 40 ft container or two 20 ft containers?
Two used 20 ft boxes give 33.2 m³ each, at a typical ₹1,20,000 apiece; one used 40 ft box gives 67.7 m³ for a typical ₹1,80,000. Per cubic metre inside, that is ₹2,700 for the long box against ₹3,600 for a 20 ft one (20 October 2026). The 40 ft box also comes on one trailer, with one lift, onto one spot.
Two 20 ft boxes are worth the extra when:
- the plot only takes a shorter trailer, or the turn through the gate is tight;
- you want two rooms with their own doors, or two stores you may move apart later;
- the budget allows one box now and the second next year.
The 20 feet containers page has the prices of the shorter boxes.
How a 40 ft container is transported and unloaded
The box travels on a trailer at least as long as itself, behind a tractor. Walk the route before you ask for quotes: the road and the gate must take the whole rig, and nothing overhead may hang lower than the top of the box on its trailer: 2,591 mm for a standard box or 2,896 mm for a high cube, plus the height of the deck (ask the transporter for the total). Look up for cables, branches and gate arches.
At the spot, it comes off by side-lifter (a truck that lifts the box with its own cranes) or by a hired mobile crane; a tilt truck suits shorter boxes. Prepare level ground of at least 12,192 × 2,438 mm with a firm support under each corner and, for a long stay, under the middle of each long side too, so the floor does not sag. Site preparation and unloading explains each method.
Over a long distance the trailer is a large part of the bill. For scale, one shipping line’s 2026 tariffs (GST not stated) give about ₹87,000 to ₹1,06,000 to haul a 40 ft box from Mundra port to Delhi NCR, about 1,164 km by road, and about ₹37,000 from Mundra to Ahmedabad. Those 5 published rates come to ₹74 to ₹93 per km; for your own route, the delivered price estimate gives an order of magnitude, and a seller near you quotes the trucking with the box.
Buying a 40 ft container safely
- Check the seller first. The GSTIN on the quote should belong to the legal name and address that the taxpayer search of the GST portal shows.
- See this box, not a catalogue photo. Go to the yard, or ask the seller to walk you round it on a video call, with the container number on the door, the CSC plate and the roof in view; how to inspect a used container lists the rest.
- Pay a business account in the seller’s own name, and hold back the balance until you have seen the box or it stands on your ground.
- Match the papers. The invoice should name the box by its container number and state its grade, the delivery terms and how GST is charged; check the number on the doors before the truck leaves.
Questions about 40 ft containers
What does a 40 ft container cost in India?
Used, the typical asking price is ₹1,80,000 for a standard box and ₹1,90,000 for a high cube (20 October 2026). New and one-trip boxes have few sellers: 2 sellers ask ₹3,25,000 to ₹5,00,000 for a standard box, 2 sellers ask ₹2,95,000 to ₹3,65,000 for a high cube; an as-is box was asked ₹1,67,000 and ₹1,68,000 by 1 seller. Add the trailer, the lifting and GST unless a quote includes them.
What is the difference between a 40 ft and a 40 ft high cube container?
The height alone: the high cube is 305 mm taller, 9′ 6″ outside against 8′ 6″, with the same length and width. The size-type code painted on the doors tells them apart: it starts with 42 on a standard 40 ft box (42G1) and with 45 on a high cube (45G1).
Where can I find 40 ft containers for sale near me?
In the reading of 20 October 2026, used 40 ft boxes were listed mostly around Delhi NCR, at a typical ₹1,80,000 (24 sellers), and Mumbai, at ₹1,80,000 (22 sellers); the table above gives the other areas with at least 5 sellers. Wherever you are, put your PIN code in a quote request: partner sellers who cover it reply with a price delivered to your site, so a box from another state is compared with its trucking.
Is a 40 ft container cheaper to import from China?
Only for a batch of new boxes, once everything is counted. A container imported to stay in India pays 10% basic customs duty (its own tariff line since 1 May 2026, at an unchanged rate), the social welfare surcharge on that duty and 18% IGST, plus ocean freight, port charges and clearance. A box bought in India should have paid all this already: ask for the bill of entry. See importing a container into India.
Can I rent a 40 ft container instead?
Yes, though few rents are published: 1 for a 40 ft box in this survey, at ₹18,000 a month. Ask about the deposit, the minimum period and transport both ways before you compare. See rent or buy a container.
