40 feet container sold as-is (damaged or scrap)
12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m outside · 67.7 m³ inside · about 3,700 kg empty
The 40 ft container sold as-is is a used ISO 42G1 box whose damage the seller declares, what listings in India also call an old, damaged or scrap container: dented or holed panels, a roof that lets rain in, a soft floor or doors that no longer seal. Its 12,032 mm of length remain usable as a shell, sold without promise. Partner sellers who have one quote a price, delivered to your PIN code or where the box stands.

Asking prices differ widely: for a used 20 feet shipping container, half of the 116 sellers we read on 20 October 2026 ask between ₹1,04,000 and ₹1,40,000, ₹36,000 apart. Several quotes show you where the low end is.

What a damaged 40 ft container is good for
A long shell that does not have to stay dry still has uses:
- A covered yard or a lean-to: two boxes set apart, with a roof between them, make a shed for machines or materials.
- A wall, a boundary or a windbreak on a site or a farm.
- A frame for a workshop that you will clad, roof and line yourself.
For goods that must stay dry, or a room people work in, a used 40 ft box keeps the rain out.
The price is not always the attraction. Asking prices for 40 ft as-is boxes are rare: 1 seller this week, asking ₹1,67,000 and ₹1,68,000 (20 October 2026), while 30 of the 80 sellers of used 40 ft boxes ask that much or less. One price is not a market, but it is a good reason to ask for an as-is box and a used one in the same request.
Looking for the cheapest shell? Ask about two other boxes as well: 10 of the 80 sellers of used 40 ft boxes ask ₹1,30,000 or less, and a 20 ft as-is box is typically ₹75,000 (3 sellers). Two short boxes can wall a lean-to too: compare their price with one long box, trucking included.
As-is
Sold with its damage declared and without promise.
- Damage declared by the seller: holes, deep rust, a weak floor or doors that do not seal.
- Sold without promise, sometimes only where it stands.
- For a shed, a shelter, a wall or a frame to be clad, not for dry storage of goods.
Check before you pay: the box itself, on site: what holds, what leaks, and how it will be lifted onto the truck.

Damage on a long box
On a 40 ft box the damage is spread over twelve metres, and so is the repair:
- The roof. Forty feet of roof collect dents over the years, and the dents hold rain until it finds a way in. Climb a ladder and look along it.
- The floor. Forklifts work the whole length, not only the door end. From the doors to the end wall, test each board with your foot before you put your weight on it.
- The long side panels and the bottom rails. Handling leaves gashes in the sides, and rust eats the rails where the box stood on wet ground.
Patching a long roof or replacing a long floor costs more than on a 20 ft box, so have the repairs quoted before you decide: a sound used box may cost less in the end.
Check it, then plan the lift
See it in daylight before you pay, and stand inside with the doors shut: any daylight you see is a hole in the steel. Then look at the corners. A 40 ft box is lifted by its four corner castings, with twelve metres of box hanging between them, so cracked castings or bottom rails rusted through can make the lift unsafe. Site preparation and unloading explains the lift at your end.
“As-is, where-is” means the seller sells the box where it stands and the collecting is yours: a 40 ft trailer and a crane or side-lifter at the seller’s yard, then a second lift at your end. As an estimate, not a quote, the trailer alone comes to about ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 for the 578 km from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad (see the delivered price estimate). Otherwise, ask for a price delivered to your PIN code. GST at 18% may come on top: ask whether the price includes it before you compare (GST on shipping containers).

Questions about the 40 ft as-is container
Is a scrap 40 ft container sold by weight?
Not when it is sold to be used. Sellers in India call an old or damaged box “scrap” and still price it as a box, as the seller on this page does. Steel bought for melting is priced by the kilo instead, and a 40 ft box weighs about 3,700 kg empty; that trade is outside our price reading, so ask the dealer for their rate.
Can a damaged 40 ft box be made weathertight?
Often, at a cost. Holes can be welded over, panels replaced, the roof coated and the door seals changed; a floor is replaced panel by panel. Get the work quoted before you buy, and compare the total with a used box: sellers who state no grade ask ₹1,75,000 (60 sellers).
What does an old or scrap 40 ft container cost?
This week, 1 seller on IndiaMART asked ₹1,67,000 and ₹1,68,000 (20 October 2026): too few for a price you can rely on. Partner sellers quote the box they have; lifting and trucking come on top unless the quote is for delivery.
