New and one-trip 40 feet container
12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m outside · 67.7 m³ inside · about 3,700 kg empty
The new or one-trip 40 ft container is a standard ISO 42G1 box that has made one voyage at most, usually loaded at the factory in China and emptied in India. It comes with even factory paint, straight panels, a clean plywood floor and supple door seals, over 28.3 m² (305 sq ft) and 67.7 m³. Few sellers price one in public: partner sellers who stock one quote it in the paint they hold, with delivery to your PIN code.

Asking prices differ widely: for a used 20 feet shipping container, half of the 116 sellers we read on 20 October 2026 ask between ₹1,04,000 and ₹1,40,000, ₹36,000 apart. Several quotes show you where the low end is.

When a new 40 ft shipping container is worth it
The 2 sellers of new 40 ft boxes on marketplaces ask ₹3,25,000 to ₹5,00,000 (20 October 2026), and the one listing with an exact price asked ₹3,45,000; a used 40 ft box is typically ₹1,80,000. On so few prices, read the gap as an order of magnitude: the quotes decide. What the extra buys is a long box with almost no wear:
- A clean store for years: files, textiles, packed goods, spare parts or electrical stock, which rust flakes and old oil stains would spoil.
- A box that is seen: a showroom, a sales office or a shop front on the road, where dents and patched paint would put customers off. Container shops and container cafés and container offices show what is built this way.
- A conversion with headroom: lining the floor and the ceiling takes height from the 2,393 mm inside; the one-trip 40 ft high cube starts 305 mm higher.
For plain storage on a site, a used 40 ft box does the same job.
One-trip
Carried at most one load from the factory: straight panels, even paint, clean floor.
- One voyage at most, usually from the factory in China to India, then emptied.
- Straight panels and even factory paint, at most a few handling marks.
- Clean plywood floor, soft door seals, locking bars that turn by hand.
- CSC plate with a recent manufacture date.
Check before you pay: the manufacture date on the CSC plate, and photos of the actual unit.

Paint and colour
The box keeps the paint it was built in, so the colour is a choice among the boxes a seller holds, not a repaint. Pick one above (its RAL code then shows under the title) and, if the exact shade matters, write that code in the message of the quote form; the seller confirms what is in stock. On a 40 ft box, repainting in another colour is a job of its own, to be quoted apart.
Is a one-trip 40 ft container really new?
A listing may say “new” for a box that has made one trip, so ask which yours is. Two checks help. The CSC plate, the metal safety-approval plate on the door, shows when the box was built: a recent date fits a one-trip story and an older one calls for questions, though no plate records the voyages. And a one-trip box has no welded patches, no repainted panels and no old cargo labels: ask for daylight photos of the inside, the floor and the door seals before you pay, and on delivery match the container number on the door with the quote.

The markings on the doors give the tare and maximum gross weight of each box, the maximum gross also being on its CSC plate: a box rated higher carries more, its maximum gross weight minus its tare. Delivery and GST
Before you ask for quotes, walk the route from the road to the spot: a 40 ft box comes on a trailer at least as long as itself, behind a tractor, and the narrow gate or tight turn of a town site can stop the rig where a 20 ft truck would pass. Site preparation and unloading covers the access and the lift.
Ask where the box stands: a one-trip box may still be at a port or an inland depot, and the trailer from there is part of the delivered price. As an estimate, not a quote, a 40 ft box comes out at about ₹46,500 to ₹58,500 for the 628 km from Chennai port to Hyderabad; the delivered price estimate covers other routes. At about 3,700 kg it comes off by side-lifter or crane: walk round it for fresh dents and scratches while the truck is still there.
GST on a new box is charged on its full price, at 18% (HSN 8609): ask whether the quote includes it. A GST-registered business can claim it back as input tax credit, on a tax invoice in its own name. See GST on shipping containers.
Questions about the new 40 ft container
What does a new 40 ft container cost in India?
The 2 sellers on IndiaMART ask ₹3,25,000 to ₹5,00,000 (20 October 2026): too few for a firm price. Ask several sellers for the same colour and delivery, then compare delivered prices.
Is a new high cube dearer than a new standard 40 ft box?
The prices of the week cannot say. On IndiaMART, 2 sellers ask ₹2,95,000 to ₹3,65,000 for a new high cube, and 2 sellers ask ₹3,25,000 to ₹5,00,000 for a standard box (20 October 2026); the listings with an exact price asked ₹5,75,000 for a high cube and ₹3,45,000 for a standard box. With so few prices, ask for both in one request and compare the delivered prices.
Can I choose the colour of a new 40 ft box?
Yes, among the boxes partner sellers hold. Choose it when you add the box to your quote, with the number of boxes if you want several in the same colour; the replies say what each seller can supply.
